This book documents the long struggle of Indigenous Women to gain recognition, representation, and political authority throughout five Congresses of the Indigenous Peoples of the Archipelago. At the first Congress in 1999, only around 20 of 208 participants were women, yet they succeeded in securing equal male and female representation in AMAN’s National Council and bringing land dispossession, violence, and state control over women’s bodies into the movement’s agenda. After years of setbacks, consolidation, and persistent organizing, PEREMPUAN AMAN was established on 16 April 2012 as a dedicated political and organizational space for Indigenous Women, reaching 615 members by 2015. The book makes clear that this space was not simply granted, but won through continuous resistance to state and corporate power, as well as patriarchy within Indigenous communities and the broader Indigenous Peoples’ movement.
